The Grundig G6 Buzz Aldrin edition is my first shortwave. I read reviews on different shortwave radios until my head spun from all of the information. I had to make a decision between the G6 and the Sony 7600GR. Well, I couldn’t decide, so I bought both!
The G6 feels good and natural in my hands, and the operation feels intuitive to me. Sturdy, small, pocketable. I like the tuning knob, I know perhaps some don’t care, it seems a throwback to the eighties when everything seemed to have a tuning knob, but I like it. The time setup and programming stations is easy, the instructions were pretty straightforward. I am not especially talented when figuring out the workings of electronics, so for me to grasp the instructions and understand them immediately shows the ease of operation.
I live in central suburban Connecticut, I wasn’t expecting to get many stations during the day, but I did get a few, mainly some Christian programming. About and after 6pm, I got a lot more. With just the whip antenna, I picked up many stations, and listened with glee as I tuned into stations like Radio China, Mexico, and for a little while, I even managed to pick up Cairo. For about 12 hours, it never left my hands until I finally had to go to sleep.
The FM is stunning, so I will be bringing my G6 to work with me every day. I haven’t picked up anything on the AIR band, but it doesn’t surprise or concern me. Bradley International Airport is a good thirty miles from my house, but I plan to check it out further at some point when I am actually near an airport.
I like the orange backlight, wish the numbers and other keys were backlit as well, but it’s a very minor thing, and in the dark, the face of it is simple enough where I can operate it by feel. I think that the backlight goes off after a few seconds in order not to contribute to battery drain, but an option to keep the backlight on would have been nice. Again, trivial, when I consider how great the G6 works for me. When the weather warms up here in the evening I will hose myself down with bug spray and head outdoors to see what other stations I get.
The earbuds it came with are incredibly uncomfortable, but I plan to keep them, as they will do in a pinch should my dog chew up my good ones for the third time. I like the fact it comes with an AC adaptor, a traveling case, and a little commemorative card with Buzz Aldrin’s best regards. (I have declared the card a good-luck item and placed it in my wallet.)
In all, I have to say it is a well thought out and snappy little radio. I am very happy with it, and would recommend it whole-heartedly. I will probably love the more-complicated 7600GR that I also bought, but I suspect that I will probably have a preference to Grundig radios in the future.
